Lower Castle Woringen

The Lower Castle (also called Schlössle or Vogelhaus) is located in Woringen in the district of Unterallgäu in Bavaria.

The castle is located about 400 meters northwest of the parish church Unser Frauen in Woringen and is situated on an artificially raised hill. The base area of the building is square with a side length of 10.6 meters. It is presumed that a Roman burgus was originally located here to secure the Roman road from Cambodunum (Kempten) to Caelius Mons (Kellmünz an der Iller). In 1323, Konrad von Rothenstein received the order from Archduke Leopold I of Austria to build two castles (Upper and Lower Castle) in Woringen. In this context, a moated ditch was dug around the existing embankment and the Rotensteinerbächle stream was diverted. This turned the Lower Castle into a moated castle. The moated ditch has since been filled in, but as late as 1709, the castle moat was stocked with 196 carp. The Lords of Rothenstein remained in possession of the castle until 1417. In that year, the Lower Castle (along with the entire village of Woringen) was sold to the Ravensburg family Möttelin, called von Rappenstein. Almost 100 years later, in 1516, the Lower Castle was sold to the Free Imperial City of Memmingen. Subsequently, the castle came into the possession of the Bavarian State in 1849 and later to the municipality of Woringen. The current form of the building was erected or rebuilt around the 17th century. The Lower Castle is a protected monument.
