Lower Castle Schellenberg
The Lower Schellenberg Castle, also known as Alt-Schellenberg Castle, is a fascinating ruin in the Principality of Liechtenstein. It was built around 1250 by the Lords of Schellenberg and bears witness to a turbulent history in the region.
History+
The origins of the Lower Schellenberg Castle date back to around 1250, when it was built by the Lords of Schellenberg. In 1317, ownership transferred to the Counts of Werdenberg-Heiligenberg. Between 1350 and 1380, the complex underwent significant expansion, giving it its current form. An outwork was added in 1402. During the Appenzell War in 1405, the castle was destroyed and subsequently abandoned. It was not until 1956 that Prince Franz Josef II donated the ruin to the Historical Association for the Principality of Liechtenstein, which carried out excavation and conservation work from 1978 to 1980.
