Turun linna (Castle)

Turku Castle, also known as Turun linna, stands as Finland's largest preserved medieval structure. It rises majestically at the mouth of the Aurajoki River in Turku, combining a medieval main castle with a Renaissance outer bailey, making it an outstanding testament to Finnish history.
History+
The castle's origins date back to the late 13th century when Sweden began to consolidate its rule in the region. Construction likely started around 1280, with Duke Bengt Birgersson of Finland bearing the costs. Initially conceived as a castellum, the complex was transformed into a closed castle under Duke Waldemar Magnusson (1302-1318). It faced its first test in battle in 1318 during an attack by the Novgorodians, which it successfully repelled. A fire in 1364 after a siege led to extensive expansions. In the 15th century, the castle changed hands multiple times and was further expanded under Regent Sten Sture the Elder. In the 16th century, under Duke John III, the castle experienced its heyday as a magnificent Renaissance-style residence. Later, it served as a governor's seat and from 1776 as a prison. A Soviet bombing raid in 1941 severely damaged the castle, but extensive restoration work completed it by 1961.
