Trim Castle, an impressive 12th-century Norman fortress, rises majestically in the Irish county of Meath. Once conceived as one of Europe's largest castles, its sprawling ruins today bear witness to its historical significance and its role as a center of power in the region.

History+

The origins of Trim Castle date back to 1172, when Hugh de Lacy, the first Lord of Meath, and his son Walter erected a motte with a wooden tower at this site on the banks of the River Boyne. This marked the beginning of the Cambro-Norman presence in Meath. The complex was rapidly expanded into a powerful castle and became the central stronghold of the de Lacy family in Ireland. Its protective function attracted trade and monastic life, fostering the development of the surrounding settlement. The ruins served as a backdrop for the film Braveheart in 1995 and later for the television series Mystic Knights – The Legend of Tir Na Nog.
