Torre de Canyamel

The construction of the Torre de Canyamel took place in the 13th century, specifically in 1237, by the Montsó family, after whom it was originally named Torre d'en Montsó. It primarily served to protect Catalan settlers from pirate attacks. In the 15th century, with the decline of piracy and the advent of firearms, the tower lost its military significance. It was converted into a residence and also served as a storage facility for sugarcane grown in the surrounding valley. From this agricultural use, the current name Torre de Canyamel is derived, which translates to "Sugarcane Tower."

The Torre de Canyamel fortress is located in Canyamel on Mallorca, an island of the Islas Baleares (Balearic Islands) in Spain. It stands at an elevation of approximately 46 meters above sea level.

Visitors can explore the Torre de Canyamel today. Inside the tower, a small museum provides insights into the building's history and former use. The fort is surrounded by ancillary buildings, some of which still exist and are in use today.
