The Thracian Fortress near Starosel is an impressive testament to ancient architecture and culture in Bulgaria. Located on the Kozi Gramadi peak, this archaeological complex reveals the remains of a once significant Thracian residence and fortification, offering deep insights into the region's history.
History+
The extensive Thracian architectural complex on Kozi Gramadi peak was discovered in 2005. It encompassed a residence, an ancient fortress, rock sanctuaries, roads, tumulus necropolises, and quarries for building materials. The Thracian ruler's residence, dated to the 5th to 6th century BC, is situated in the Sredna Gora mountains. A massive fortress wall surrounded the ruler's seat, protecting an area of approximately 0.45 hectares. An ancient road connected the nearby fortress with the residence. The palace was two-storied and featured a main entrance and wall decorations. In a large hall, two symmetrical staircases led to a platform, presumably used for receptions or rituals. During excavations, bronze coins of Teres II and Philip of Macedon, fragments of Greek and Roman pottery, parts of a golden breastplate, and an iron double axe were found. On the slopes of the peak, spear and arrowheads, lead sling bullets, and a short curved sword were discovered. Recent archaeological investigations also uncovered a unique rock tomb and a second fortress wall. Many of the monolithic rocks in the area served as Thracian cult sites. The finds are exhibited in the National Historical Museum in Sofia, and excavations are ongoing.
