Thirlestane Castle

The origins of Thirlestane Castle stretch back to before the 13th century, when a fortified structure already stood on this strategically important site, securing access to Edinburgh through the Lauderdale valley. In the 16th century, the grounds came into the possession of Robert Lauder of that Ilk. After a turbulent period, marked by feuds and the English occupation during the “Rough Wooing,” Sir John Maitland acquired Castle Hill in 1587. He had a keep built on the foundations of an English fort. As Lord Chancellor of Scotland and on the occasion of James VI's wedding, he was elevated to 1st Lord Maitland of Thirlestane in 1590 and expanded the castle into a representative family seat. His descendant, John Maitland, 2nd Earl of Lauderdale, one of the most influential politicians of his time, commissioned architect Sir William Bruce in the 1670s for an extensive renovation. Bruce added two towers to the complex and created magnificent state rooms with elaborate stucco ceilings. In the mid-19th century, architects David Bryce and William Burn expanded the castle in the Scots Baronial style, adding further wings and giving the floor plan a T-shape. In 1984, the castle was transferred to a trust, which, with the support of public and private funds, is dedicated to preserving this significant edifice.
