Kloster Kaufbeuren

The origins of the women's convent date back to before the mid-13th century, with a community of women called “sorores in curia villicali” first mentioned in writing in 1261. Around 1315, this community adopted the Rule of Saint Francis. The current convent church was consecrated in 1472, although an altar consecration is recorded as early as 1432, and the convent chronicle speaks of an older sacred building that fell victim to a city fire. From 1703 to 1744, Maria Crescentia Höss lived in the convent, being elected superior in 1741. During the secularization, the convent was dissolved between 1803 and 1806, and the buildings were temporarily used by the Teutonic Order. The Franciscan convent was re-established in 1831. In 2001, Maria Crescentia Höss was canonized, and in 2005, a memorial was established for her in the convent.

The convent is located in Kaufbeuren, a city in the Swabian administrative district of Bavaria, Germany.

The convent complex today serves again as a Franciscan convent and houses a memorial to Saint Crescentia Höss. The former supply garden of the convent has been transformed into a publicly accessible convent hill garden, which serves as a place of relaxation and contemplation and offers views over the city.
