Holy Temple (בֵּית־הַמִּקְדָּשׁ, Bet HaMikdasch)

The history of the Temple Mount is closely intertwined with biblical narratives. It is believed to be the site of the First Jerusalem Temple, known as Solomon's Temple. According to biblical accounts, this was built by King Solomon but was destroyed by the Babylonians under Nebuchadnezzar II around 586 BCE. After the Babylonian exile, the Second Temple was erected on the same spot, completed around 515 BCE. Under Herod the Great, this temple underwent extensive reconstruction in the Greek style starting from 21 BCE. During the Jewish War, the Herodian Temple was ultimately destroyed by the Romans in 70 CE. The Western Wall, known today as the Wailing Wall, is a surviving testament to this era. Since the late 7th century, the Dome of the Rock and the Al-Aqsa Mosque have defined the appearance of the Temple Mount.

The Temple Mount is located in Jerusalem, in the Jerusalem District, Jerusalem Region, Israel. It stands at an elevation of approximately 737 meters above sea level.

Visitors can explore the Temple Mount today. The site features the Dome of the Rock and the Al-Aqsa Mosque, two of Islam's most important holy sites. The Western Wall of the former temple, also known as the Wailing Wall, is also accessible and is a significant place for Jewish prayers.
