Temple of Hephaestus (Ἡφαιστεῖον)

Construction of the temple commenced around 449 BC and spanned several decades. Although the majority of the building was completed by approximately 430 BC, the roof and the cult statue group were only realized between 421 and 415 BC during the Peace of Nicias. The temple was likely consecrated in 415 BC. It was dedicated to the god Hephaestus, patron of blacksmithing and metalworking, a dedication influenced by the numerous foundries and metalworking crafts located in this western district of Athens. In the 5th century AD, the temple was converted into a Christian church dedicated to Saint George. This repurposing significantly contributed to its preservation, even though the ancient interior was altered. During Ottoman rule, it served as the most important Greek Orthodox church in Athens. After Greece's independence in 1834, King Otto I was welcomed here, and for a period, the temple housed Athens' first archaeological museum.

The Temple of Hephaestus is situated on the small hill of Kolonos Agoraios, on the western edge of the Agora in Athens, Greece, at an elevation of approximately 64 m above sea level.

Today, the Temple of Hephaestus is part of the archaeological site of the Athenian Agora and is open for visitors. It stands as an impressive example of ancient architecture, still revealing its original form despite the passage of centuries.
