Town Fortification Stralsund-Küter Gate

The Kütertor is one of the former city gates of the Hanseatic city of Stralsund; it was one of the land gates of the Stralsund city fortifications. Together with the Kniepertor, it is the last remaining city gate of Stralsund.

The gate, located on the land side of the city on the Strelasund, was first mentioned in a document in 1281. It is located at the end of Heilgeiststraße towards Knieperwall or Küterdamm. It gets its name from the Küter, who were butchers who processed the offal of animals (Küt).

In 1446, the Kütertor, which can still be seen today, was rebuilt. It is 10.30 meters wide and 10.40 meters deep. Until 1862, the gate was used as a prison, later converted for residential purposes. From 1963 to 2003, it was part of a youth hostel, alongside the Wasserkunst and the water tower.

Since 2012, the Kütertor and adjacent buildings (including Wasserkunst, Mauerhaus, water tower, and three new buildings) have been converted into a residential area, under the name Areal am Kütertor. As of June 2013, the work is well advanced, with completion expected in 2013.

The Kütertor is located in the core area of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Historic Old Towns of Stralsund and Wismar".
