Wilten Abbay

The founding of Wilten Abbey is dated to 1138, when Bishop Reginbert of Brixen settled Premonstratensians from the Upper Swabian monastery of Rot an der Rot here to replace an existing collegiate church. A popular legend, however, attributes its founding to the giant Haymon around 880, who is said to have built the monastery out of remorse after a duel and his conversion to Christianity. The abbey experienced its heyday in the 17th and 18th centuries. After the collapse of the tower, which destroyed the Gothic structure, reconstruction in the Baroque style began under Abbot Dominikus Löhr from 1651. The consecration of the church took place in 1665 in the presence of Emperor Leopold I. Throughout its history, the abbey faced several threats, including dissolution by the Kingdom of Bavaria from 1807 to 1816 and expropriation during the Nazi era. After the bombings of 1943 and 1944, reconstruction was necessary, which was completed in 1988 for the 850th anniversary of its founding.

Wilten Abbey is located in the Wilten district of the provincial capital Innsbruck, in the state of Tyrol, Austria, at an altitude of approximately 597 m above sea level.

Today, Wilten Abbey is an active monastery and home to the Wilten Boys' Choir, one of Europe's oldest boys' choirs. Visitors can explore the impressive Baroque abbey church with its frescoes, stucco work, and three organs. In the entrance area, a statue of the giant Haymon, over five meters tall, commemorates the old legend.
