St. Paul's Abbey in the Lavanttal

St. Paul's Abbey in Lavanttal is a significant Benedictine monastery in Carinthia, Austria. It is perched on a rocky outcrop in the Lavanttal valley and is renowned for its rich history and valuable art and book collections. The extensive complex, whose Baroque buildings largely date from the 17th century, also houses an older Romanesque collegiate church.
History+
The abbey's origins trace back to 1091, when it was founded by Engelbert of Spanheim. Previously, this site likely held an Illyrian or Celtic fortification, later a Roman castellum, and in the Middle Ages, Lavant Castle. After its dissolution under Joseph II at the end of the 18th century, the monastery was revived in 1809. Even another dissolution during the Nazi era could not break its long tradition, making St. Paul today the oldest continuously active monastery in Carinthia. In the 17th century, under Abbot Hieronymus Marchstaller, the abbey experienced a new flourishing period, during which the current Baroque buildings were constructed.
