Reichersberg Abbey

The founding of Reichersberg Abbey took place around 1084 by Wernher von Reichersberg and his wife Dietbirga. Originally conceived as a castle, the property was converted into a monastery after the early death of their son. The founders chose the Archangel Michael as their patron saint. Despite initial difficulties and expulsions of the canons, especially after Wernher's death, the abbey experienced its first flourishing period under Provost Gerhoch (1132–1169). Gerhoch, a renowned theologian and reformer, solidified the monastery's position, established a convent for canonesses and a hospital, and secured papal protection. He also acquired properties and tithe revenues, contributing to economic stability. The abbey continues to exist today as a monastery of the Augustinian Canons.

Reichersberg Abbey is situated in the municipality of Reichersberg, which belongs to the Ried im Innkreis district in Upper Austria, Austria. It is located at an elevation of approximately 337 meters above sea level.

Reichersberg Abbey continues to be used as a monastery by the Congregation of the Austrian Augustinian Canons and remains an active religious site with a rich history and architecture.
