Millstatt Abbey, a former monastery in Millstatt am See, Austria, is a prominent Romanesque complex in Carinthia. Especially the collegiate church and the cloister impress with their detailed animal symbolism. Once an important spiritual and cultural center of Upper Carinthia, it now houses a museum and a hotel.

History+

Millstatt Abbey was founded before 1122, probably around 1070, by the brothers Aribo II and Poto from the Bavarian Aribonid family, and initially managed by Benedictine monks. For centuries, the monastery was an important landowner in Carinthia, Friuli, and Salzburg. In 1469, the Benedictine monastery was dissolved at the instigation of Emperor Frederick III and handed over to the Order of St. George Knights. After the decline of the knightly order in 1598, the abbey passed to the Jesuits. The final dissolution occurred in 1773 under Emperor Joseph II.
