Gernrode Abbey

The monastery was founded around 960 by Margrave Gero on his castle Geronisroth as a collegiate church for canonesses. After the death of his son, Gero bequeathed his entire fortune to the abbey, ensuring its rich endowment from the outset. The first abbess was Hathui, his son's widow and a niece of Queen Mathilde. The abbey also served as Gero's burial place and for the perpetuation of prayer in his memory. As early as 961, Otto I placed the abbey under royal protection and granted it immunity. Originally dedicated to Saints Mary and Peter, an arm relic of Saint Cyriacus, acquired by Gero during a trip to Rome, came to Gernrode via the Frose provostry. Subsequently, Gernrode developed into a center for the veneration of Cyriacus. Over the centuries, the Ascanians expanded their vogtei rights. The monastery was secularized and dissolved in 1806.

The former monastery is located in the town of Gernrode, a district of Quedlinburg, in the Harz Mountains in Saxony-Anhalt. It is situated at an elevation of approximately 220 meters above sea level.

The Romanesque collegiate church, a three-aisled basilica with a hall crypt, a nave with alternating supports and nuns' galleries, a Holy Sepulchre chapel, and a penitential cell in the side aisle, remains preserved to this day, bearing witness to the abbey's former importance.
