Stiftsruine St. Georg

The history of the collegiate church dedicated to Saint George is closely linked to the Salian dynasty. Emperor Conrad II is considered the first founder, while Henry IV is named as the second founder and Henry V as a significant benefactor of the collegiate church. Archaeological findings confirm this development and indicate that the Salians drew upon even older predecessor buildings. A castle complex on the Georgenberg, whose character and dating are debated, is mentioned in various historical sources. A hypothesis that an earlier imperial castle named "Alaburg" was located here, conquered in 984, is discussed. Later reports from the 13th century speak of the destruction of a "slot" of the Dukes of Saxony on the Georgenberg. Excavations in the 1960s uncovered an approximately 18.50-meter-long hall building with an eastern apse and western gallery, attributed to the early 10th century and considered the oldest structure. Around 1025, Conrad II had a vaulted octagon erected west of this chapel, similar in construction to the Palatine Chapel in Aachen, with a north-south extension of about 27 meters. Between 1065 and 1073, under Henry IV, the old chapel was transformed into a two-story, three-aisled choir extension.

The former monastery of Stift Georgenberg is located in Goslar, a city in the state of Lower Saxony in Germany.

Of the former collegiate buildings, which were burned down during the Goslar unrest in 1527, today almost only fragments of the foundation walls remain. These ruins are freely accessible and can be visited.
