Baumgartenberg Abbey

The monastery was founded in 1141 and existed until its dissolution in 1784. It was endowed by Otto von Machland and his wife Jeuta von Peilstein. Initially settled by monks from Morimond, it was later subordinated to Heiligenkreuz Abbey. The late Romanesque abbey church was consecrated in 1243. In the 15th century, the complex suffered arson during Hussite incursions, leading to its reconstruction in the Late Gothic style. In the 17th century, the monastery underwent Baroque renovation under Abbot Bernhard Breil, a development continued by his successor Candidus Pfiffer, but which ended around 1700 due to financial difficulties. Two Baumgartenberg manuscripts from the early 14th century are noteworthy, including a land register from 1335 and the Baumgartenberg Formula Book. In 1784, the monastery was dissolved by Emperor Joseph II and subsequently served as a penal institution until 1811. A fire in 1825 destroyed a large part of the convent wing.

The former Baumgartenberg Abbey is situated in the market town of Baumgartenberg in the Perg district of Upper Austria, Austria, at an elevation of approximately 242 meters above sea level.

The former Abbey Church of the Assumption of Mary now serves as the parish church of the market town of Baumgartenberg. The European Gymnasium Baumgartenberg is housed in the monastery buildings, and the complex is currently used by the Sisters of the Good Shepherd.
