The former monastery Stift auf dem Berge, also known as St. Mariae auf dem Berge, is a historic sacred building located in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Originally founded in the 11th century as a convent for nuns, it later transformed into a collegiate church for noblewomen, shaping local history for centuries.
History+
The origins of Stift auf dem Berge date back to 1006, when construction of this monastery began. It was established as a daughter foundation of the Imperial Abbey of Herford. During the late Middle Ages, the institution underwent a transformation, becoming a secular collegiate church for noblewomen. This new form of community persisted even after the Reformation. The collegiate church was eventually dissolved in 1810.
