Protestant Town Church Mutzschen

Church

The Mutzschen Town Church, originally a Romanesque sacred building, is located in the Mutzschen district of Grimma in the Leipzig district, Saxony. It has been reshaped and expanded multiple times over the centuries, incorporating elements of late Gothic and Historicism. Today, the building is a protected cultural monument in Saxony and bears witness to a long history as a church center.

History+

The Mutzschen Town Church was founded as a monastery around the year 1250. Originally a Romanesque choir tower church, it was used as a monastery church by the Servite Order from about 1490 onwards. In 1495, the building underwent a significant expansion with the addition of transept-like chapels and a choir. Following a devastating town fire in 1681, the church was rebuilt. Several restorations took place in the 19th century, including a comprehensive measure in 1899 under the direction of Julius Zeißig. A partial collapse of the choir in 1938, caused by an underground passage, led to further repairs in the 1950s, during which the choir was separated from the nave. Further restorations followed in 1967/68 and most recently in 2001.

The late Gothic choir extension is characterized by buttresses and a slightly off-axis three-eighths closure. Inside, the church has a flat ceiling, while the chapels feature pointed barrel vaults. Galleries are installed on three sides of the nave. The furnishings include a small triptych with biblical depictions, a 17th-century wooden crucifix, and an organ from 1899.
