Luckau Town Fortification

Large parts of the old city wall from the 13th and 14th centuries have been preserved. The Red Tower is particularly striking.

The tower, which is now 30 meters high, was part of the Calau Gate, located in the direction of the city of Calau. The tower was built from the end of the 13th, beginning of the 14th century and was raised several times over time. Its current Welsche Haube (Baroque dome) was built in 1871.

The base of the round brick tower has a diameter of 8 meters with a wall thickness of 2.50 meters. The facade is unarticulated. Due to its original function as a defensive tower, access to the tower is on the city side at a height of 6.90 meters above the level of today's pavement. Extensive renovation work was carried out in 1992 and 1993.

On June 4, 1813, allied Prussian and Russian troops defeated French occupation troops on the grounds in front of the tower, preventing their advance on Berlin. A commemorative plaque on the tower commemorates this event.
