Karlstadt Town Fortification

History of the City Wall+
From 1198 to 1202, Karlstadt was built by the Würzburg Bishop Konrad von Querfurt. During the reign of Bishop Otto I von Lobdeburg from 1207 to 1223, the citizens of Karlstadt were instructed to fortify the city. This was completed in 1304. In 1396, the city joined the Franconian League of Cities. Under Prince-Bishops Melchior Zobel von Giebelstadt and Friedrich von Wirsberg, the city wall was further expanded and reinforced from 1544-1573. In the 19th century, the northeastern part of the city wall was demolished.
