Town Fortification Demmin
The Demmin town fortifications, a historic structure in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, once encircled the town of Demmin. Strategically situated at the confluence of the Peene, Tollense, and Trebel rivers, it played a central role in the region's defense for centuries.
History+
As early as the 12th century, the Pomeranian dukes utilized Demmin's location and built the House Demmin castle. Construction of the town fortifications began in the mid-13th century and was completed in the 15th century. Maintenance work was carried out in the 16th century. During the Thirty Years' War and the subsequent Swedish era, Demmin was expanded into a significant fortress and was the scene of numerous battles in the 17th and 18th centuries. By order of Frederick the Great, the fortifications were razed in the second half of the 18th century.

Today, parts of the former town fortifications are still preserved and can be visited. These include the Luisentor gate and the Pulverturm tower in the western part of the town, as well as remnants of the town wall. In the south and north of the old town, fortified ramparts are also still present. East of the town center, a dry moat can be found.
