Town Fortification Angermünde

The Pulverturm (Powder Tower) is, besides remnants of the city wall, the only preserved building of Angermünde's city fortifications. Presumably completed in the last third of the 13th century, it served as a watchtower on the south side of the city. In the 18th century, it temporarily served as a prison, and in the 19th century, the local merchants used it as a warehouse, at times also as a powder magazine. This earned it the name "Pulverturm". Of the total 21-meter-high, five-story tower, about 3.5 meters are underground. Storks have continuously nested on the pyramid helmet with its crenellated walkway since 1850. It is the oldest nesting site in the southeastern Uckermark.
