St. Ulrici (Sangerhausen)

St. Ulrici Church in Sangerhausen, located in Mansfeld-Südharz, Saxony-Anhalt, is an outstanding example of Romanesque architecture and is considered the oldest and most significant sacred building in the city. Its distinctive construction sets it apart from regional Romanesque styles, making it a remarkable cultural monument.
History+
The exact time of the first church's construction on this site is unknown. In 1100, Landgrave Ludwig the Springer donated the church of Sangerhausen to the Benedictine monastery of Reinhardsbrunn, likely referring to the later St. Ulrici Church, which may have housed a collegiate chapter at the time and served as a burial site for members of the comital family. A new church building was begun soon after 1116 following a vow by Ludwig the Springer and consecrated between 1135 and 1140. From 1265, a Cistercian nunnery was established adjacent to the church, which was dissolved in 1539. Since then, St. Ulrici Church has served as an Evangelical parish church.

On site+
The three-aisled pillar basilica, constructed from quarry stone and sandstone ashlar, featuring a transept and a crossing tower, is an active place of worship today. Its octagonal crossing tower with a pointed spire defines the cityscape of Sangerhausen. Inside, the impressively narrow central nave and transept, along with the irregular groin vaults, are notable. The bronze baptismal font dates from 1369, and a crucifix from around 1500 adorns the choir. Extensive restoration work has been ongoing since 1991.
