St. Ulrich (Habach)

The St. Ulrich collegiate church was founded in the 11th century by Count Norbert von Hohenwart, likely as a canonry, though a clear affiliation with the Augustinian rule is not confirmed. In 1330, Habach, along with other Upper Bavarian monasteries, was granted market rights by Emperor Louis the Bavarian. From 1560, the Bavarian dukes held the right to appoint the provosts of the collegiate church. Construction of the new Ulrichskirche began in 1663 on the ruins of an earlier church consecrated in 1073. The solemn consecration of the collegiate church by Augsburg Auxiliary Bishop Kaspar Zeiler took place in 1668. A fire in 1704 destroyed the western part of the church, the sacristy, and the bell tower. In the course of secularization, the collegiate church and its market rights were dissolved in 1802, and the collegiate church became a parish church. In the 1960s, the interior was redesigned, and some parts of the furnishings were removed. These interventions were partially reversed between 2016 and 2021, for example, by reinstalling Rococo confessionals from 1738.

St. Ulrich is located in Habach, a municipality in the district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Bavaria, Germany.

The former collegiate church now serves as a Catholic parish church. It houses a high altar by the Weilheim sculptor Ambros Dengler, whose altarpiece was painted by Simon Bernhard from Murnau and depicts the patron saint. The church is also equipped with six side altars, rich ceiling stucco, and a pulpit. The 14 Stations of the Cross were painted by Johannes Zick in 1732. Since a restoration in 2021, a panel painting by Elias Greuter the Elder, depicting the betrothal of St. Catherine with the Christ Child, is also back in the church.
