St. Peter's Church, Munich

The origins of St. Peter date back to the 12th century, when a Romanesque basilica was built on this site. The church was first mentioned in documents between 1225 and 1226. From 1278, the construction of a more splendid Gothic basilica began, which was consecrated in 1294. A devastating city fire in 1327 severely damaged the east choir and destroyed the towers. During the subsequent reconstruction, the church was extended, and the nave walls were moved outwards to create side chapels. Between 1379 and 1386, the westwork was redesigned, resulting in a single tower instead of the original double tower system. In the 17th century, the Gothic east choir was demolished and replaced by a Baroque trefoil choir, followed by a Baroque redesign of the nave.

St. Peter is situated on Petersbergl, the only significant elevation within Munich's historic old town. To the northwest lies Marienplatz, to the southeast Viktualienmarkt, and to the southwest Rindermarkt.

Today, St. Peter is a protected architectural monument in Bavaria. The 91-meter-high tower, popularly known as Alter Peter, is a popular viewpoint with a surrounding gallery. The three-aisled basilica houses rich furnishings, including a Baroque high altar designed by important artists such as Egid Quirin Asam and Johann Baptist Zimmermann.
