History+

The origins of St. Michael's Abbey date back to the early 11th century. In 1010, the foundation stone for the abbey church was laid as part of a Benedictine monastery. Bishop Bernward of Hildesheim, who initiated the monastery's foundation, designated the church's west crypt as his final resting place. The crypt was consecrated in 1015, and a partial consecration of the church followed in 1022, shortly before Bernward's death. The complete consecration of the entire church was carried out in 1033 by his successor Godehard. For centuries, the complex served as an important religious center for the Benedictines.
