Construction of St. Hedwig's Cathedral began in 1747 under the direction of Frederick II, based on designs by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff. Initially conceived as an expression of religious tolerance, the project evolved into a Catholic church building, erected specifically for the growing Catholic population from Silesia in Berlin. It was consecrated in 1773. The building suffered severe damage during World War II but was rebuilt between 1952 and 1963. A comprehensive interior redesign took place from 2018 to 2024, emphasizing an altar-centered arrangement of the church space.
