Sacred building
St. Gereon's Basilica

The St. Gereon Monastery in Cologne is a significant example of Romanesque and Gothic architecture in North Rhine-Westphalia. The complex, dedicated to Saint Gereon of Cologne, is distinguished by its long history, dating back to late antiquity. It is one of the city's twelve great Romanesque churches and is protected as a historical monument.
History+
The origins of St. Gereon Monastery date back to 1201, when construction of the current complex began. However, the core of the complex preserves substantial remains of an oval central building from the second half of the 4th century. This early Christian structure, later transformed and elevated into a decagon, represents one of Germany's oldest still-existing sacred buildings and is an outstanding testament to ancient representational architecture north of the Alps. Around 1220, the building acquired its current form with a dome, making it the largest freely vaulted central building of the Middle Ages north of the Alps.
