St. Emmeram's Basilica

The foundation of St. Emmeram Church occurred around 780. According to tradition, the itinerant bishop Emmeram of Regensburg was buried here around 690. Under Abbot-Bishop Sintpert, the core of the current structure was built, a flat-roofed church with an eastern apse and a preserved ring crypt. Around 980, Abbot Ramwold extended the complex with a rectangular outer crypt to the east. In 1050, a spacious western transept with a hall crypt was added. After a fire in 1166, the nave underwent profound changes and was adorned with paintings. Another fire in 1642 destroyed the nave and interior furnishings. From 1731 to 1733, a Baroque redesign was carried out by the brothers Cosmas Damian and Egid Quirin Asam, largely preserving the original spatial proportions. The monastery was elevated to a princely abbey in 1731 and, after secularization, became a parish church. In 1964, it was designated a Basilica minor.

Today, St. Emmeram serves as a parish church. The church houses a painted wooden ceiling in the western transept depicting Benedict of Nursia, as well as a Baroque high altar from 1669. The frescoes in the nave, created by Cosmas Damian and Egid Quirin Asam, illustrate the life story of Saint Emmeram. Within the church and its adjacent forecourt, there are 83 tombs, many belonging to individuals associated with the court of Thurn and Taxis or the Perpetual Diet.
