St. Chrysanthus und Daria
The former collegiate church of St. Chrysanthus and Daria in Euskirchen, North Rhine-Westphalia, is a significant Romanesque architectural monument. As the main church of Bad Münstereifel, it stands out with its well-preserved Romanesque basilica, whose architecture deviates from the conventional scheme.
History+
The Benedictine monastery, which gave rise to and named Münstereifel, was founded in 830 from Prüm. In 844, it gained considerable importance through the transfer of the relics of the Roman martyr couple Chrysanthus and Daria. The current basilica was built in the 11th century. After the dissolution of the monastery in 1803, it began to decay, leading to the collapse of the northwestern flanking tower in 1872. Reconstruction and restoration were completed by 1890. After World War II, which the church survived with minor damage, further interior and exterior renovations followed, along with an adaptation of the furnishings to post-conciliar liturgy.
