The origins of the complex date back to 750, when the first Bishop of Würzburg, Saint Burkard, founded the St. Andrew's Monastery at the foot of Marienberg. In 983, Bishop Hugo transferred the St. Andrew's Monastery to the Benedictines. Three years later, on October 14, 986, the relics of Saint Burkard were solemnly transferred to the monastery, which subsequently bore his name. The abbey was consecrated by Bishop Bruno of Würzburg. The Romanesque part of the church was consecrated in 1042, and over the centuries, the building underwent numerous extensions and alterations, including the raising of the eastern towers around 1250 and the late Gothic extension around 1490. The secularization in 1803 led to the dissolution of the collegiate chapter, which had existed since 1464, and the church became the property of the parish.

St. Burkard Church is located in the city of Würzburg in Bavaria, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 182 meters above sea level.

Today, St. Burkard serves as a Roman Catholic parish church. Inside, it houses a memorial stone from the Würzburg fishermen's guild dating back to 1010, as well as a memorial text commemorating the resistance of individual community members during the Third Reich. Notable artworks include a Madonna by Tilman Riemenschneider, the high altar by Franz Wilhelm Driesler, and a Marian altar from 1589/1590.
