St. Anna (Würzburg)

The St. Anna Convent was founded in 1714 through the initiative of Prince-Bishop Johann Philipp von Greiffenclau zu Vollraths, fulfilling a legacy left by Countess Anna von Dernbach. Initially, the convent was intended for six unmarried women from families with imperial immediacy, who had to meet specific criteria regarding age, faith, and noble lineage. A donation in 1756 allowed for an increase to eight canonesses. The Bishop of Würzburg held authority over admissions and the appointment of the abbess. The convent possessed its own jurisdictions in Järkendorf and a portion of Abtswind. Following secularization in 1803, the convent was initially dissolved but then re-established under Maximilian IV Joseph and placed under the St. Anna Order. It now provided prebends for noble and bourgeois daughters. Under Grand Duke Ferdinand of Würzburg, it regained independence in 1806, and the number of canonesses was limited to 21, including both noble and bourgeois women. In 1814, the convent once again came under the St. Anna Order.

The former St. Anna Convent is located in the city of Würzburg in the federal state of Bavaria, Germany.

The original convent buildings in Domerpfarrgasse and the later building in Theaterstraße, constructed by Balthasar Neumann in the 1750s, were destroyed during World War II. The convent's church was desacralized in 1803 and converted into a theatre. Another convent building was transferred to the Munich St. Anna Order in 1803 and has served as a Caritas senior citizens' residence since 2008.
