Solovetsky Monastery (Соловецкий монастырь)

The monastery was founded in the late 1420s by the monks German and Savvatiy from the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery. In the 15th and 16th centuries, the monastery rapidly expanded, acquiring lands on the mainland and developing into the economic and political center of the White Sea region through shrewd production and trade policies. The most important structures, including the Dormition Cathedral (1552-1557) and the Transfiguration Cathedral (1556-1564), were built in the 16th century under Hegumen Philip Kolychev. The monastery also served as an important border fortress and successfully repelled attacks by the Livonian Brothers of the Sword and the Swedes. In the 17th century, it became a stronghold of the Old Believers and resisted church reforms. After the October Revolution, it was converted into the first labor camp of the Soviet GULAG system in 1926 and closed before World War II. Later, a naval cadet school was established there.

The Solovetsky Monastery is situated on the Solovetsky Islands in the Arkhangelsk Oblast, in Northwest Russia, at an elevation of approximately 8 meters above sea level.

Today, the Solovetsky Monastery is once again an active monastic community. It also functions as a historical and architectural museum and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Extensive renovations have been carried out, and some structures are still undergoing reconstruction.
