Slane Castle

The castle's current appearance, dating back to 1785, was developed under the patronage of William Burton Conyngham and his nephew. Renowned Irish architects such as James Gandon, James Wyatt, and Francis Johnston played a significant role in this reconstruction; Thomas Hopper designed the Gothic ballroom. A devastating fire in 1991 severely damaged the eastern, river-facing part of the complex. The restoration required a ten-year renovation program, meaning Slane Castle has only been fully accessible again since 2001. The castle is the ancestral seat of the Earls of Mountcharles and is currently owned by Lord Henry Mountcharles.

The castle is located in Slane, in the district of Meath (Mí) in the Leinster (Laighin) region of Ireland, at an elevation of approximately 25 meters above sea level.

Slane Castle is privately owned and, after extensive renovations, has been accessible to visitors again since 2001. The grounds also serve annually in August as the backdrop for the Slane Concert, a major rock concert that can host up to 100,000 spectators in a natural amphitheater.
