Kloster Odacker

Chapel

The former Sisters' House, later the Benedictine convent of Odacker, was located just outside the town of Hirschberg near Warstein in North Rhine-Westphalia. The establishment, dedicated to Mary and later also to co-patron Landolinus, shaped regional history for centuries.

History+

The existence of a monastic community for women in Odacker is documented from 1484. Originally founded as a Sisters' House, it was later transformed into a Benedictine convent and affiliated with the Bursfelde Congregation. The convent was under the supervision of Grafschaft Abbey, which also held the parish rights. Odacker operated a school and a small hospital. In 1585, the complex suffered its first destructions. In 1601, Elector Ernst of Bavaria from Cologne supported the convent by donating the vicariate of St. Johannes Baptist near Oedingen. During the Thirty Years' War, the convent was devastated again in 1622, and further destructions are documented for 1639, after which the sisters left the premises. Around 1648, the convent was reoccupied. In the course of secularization in the Duchy of Westphalia, Odacker was dissolved in 1804 and, apart from a small chapel, completely demolished.

Location+

Odacker Convent was situated in the Soest region of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 363 meters above sea level.

On site+

Of the former convent complex, only the Odacker Chapel, also known as St. Anne's Chapel, remains today. The convent's lands were sold to citizens of Hirschberg after secularization. A late Gothic Madonna and an altar from the convent are now located in the provost church in Belecke.
