Schwesternhaus Blumenthal, Beckum

The Sisters' House Marienborn was founded in 1446 outside the city walls of Beckum on a donated farm. Due to the warlike conflicts of the Münster Diocesan Feud, the sisters relocated their convent within the city walls as early as 1451. In 1464, they adopted the Rule of St. Augustine. A devastating city fire in 1657 destroyed the convent buildings, which were modestly rebuilt by 1662. Despite the reconstruction, the economic decline could not be halted, leading to a decrease in the number of sisters. In the course of secularization, the convent was placed under administration in 1803 and finally dissolved on March 29, 1814.

The former Blumenthal convent is located in the city of Beckum in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

Of the original convent buildings, only the dormitory from the late 15th century remains today. After extensive renovation, this building was inaugurated in 2009 and has since served as a local and family archive. A bell cast in 2008, the Maria-Blumenthal Bell, commemorates the former convent in the carillon of St. Stephanus Church.
