Schweppenburg Castle

Schweppenburg is a castle located in the district of Niederlützingen, today part of the municipality of Brohl-Lützing, in the lower part of the Brohl Valley. Brohl-Lützing belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde Bad Breisig in the Ahrweiler district in Rhineland-Palatinate.

Schweppenburg Castle was first mentioned as a castle in 1365. Together with the still operating Schweppenburger or Mosenmühle, it came into the possession of the Andernach alderman Arnold von Schweppenburg in 1377 as a fief of Electoral Cologne. It received its current Baroque appearance through a renovation between 1637 and 1639 under Bertram von Metternich. The old fortified castle complex, which had previously served as an economic building, was demolished in 1785. Since 1716, the castle has been owned by a branch of the Cologne patrician family von Geyr (also Gir in Cologne), who then named themselves Geyr von Schweppenburg after the castle, through a purchase agreement.
