Schönborn Chapel

The Schönborn Chapel was built by the Schönborn family as a burial place.
The Schönborn Chapel is attached to the northern transept of the Romanesque Kiliansdom, where it replaced an older chapel. The client was Johann Philipp Franz von Schönborn, Maximilian von Welsch drew up the plans. Construction began in 1721, the plans were revised by Balthasar Neumann in 1723, and the shell was completed in 1724. Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt was also involved in the modifications. The consecration took place in 1736. The Schönborn Chapel is considered one of the most beautiful Baroque interior creations in Germany.
Lothar Franz von Schönborn, Elector of Mainz and Bishop of Bamberg († 1729), Friedrich Carl von Schönborn, Prince-Bishop of Würzburg and Bamberg and Imperial Vice-Chancellor († 1746), and the builder Johann Philipp Franz von Schönborn, who had been elected Bishop of Würzburg in 1719 († 1724), were buried in the Schönborn Chapel. The Schönborn Chapel can be seen from the central building of the Würzburg Residence through Hofstraße, so that the Schönborns always had their burial place in sight.
The Schönborn Chapel is one of the historic buildings in Würzburg that can be seen on the front of the 50-Mark banknote of the fourth series to the left of the portrait of Balthasar Neumann.
