Trøjborg Slotsruin (Castle)

The origins of Trøjborg date back to the first half of the 14th century, when a castle complex measuring approximately 30 by 30 meters was built on an artificial mound, surrounded by two moats, one of which was water-filled. In 1407, Claus Limbek sold the complex to Queen Margarethe, who in turn passed it on to the Diocese of Ribe. Until 1566, the castle was administered by Daniel Rantzau. After his death, his brother Peter Rantzau received the property as a gift from Frederick II for his services in the war against Sweden. Peter Rantzau had the medieval castle demolished and erected a new castle in its place, a brick structure in the Dutch Renaissance style. Around 1740, the castle underwent a Baroque-style renovation. In 1851, K. L. Knudsen acquired the castle but could not finance the necessary renovations. Attempts to sell the property to the state or use it as a seminary building failed. The demolition of the castle began in 1854. Legend has it that during the demolition work, the bridge over the moat collapsed, preventing its complete destruction. Therefore, today, the foundation, the south wall, and the moat system are still preserved. Only the historic portal with its inscription was reconstructed.

Trøjborg is located near Visby in the district of Tønder (Tondern) in the Syddanmark (Southern Denmark) region, Denmark. It stands at an elevation of approx. 8 meters above sea level.

The castle ruin of Trøjborg is accessible to visitors. The foundation, parts of the south wall, and the original moat system can be viewed. A new bridge leads over the moat to the ruin. The historic portal with its inscription has been restored and is also preserved. Apart from a simple resting place, there is no further tourist infrastructure on site.
