History+

The origins of Karlsberg Castle date back to 1760, when the Louisenhof was built on the Buchenberg near Homburg. After the death of its builder and a period of decay, Duke Karl II August of Palatinate-Zweibrücken acquired the estate in 1777. Between 1778 and 1788, he had Karlsberg Castle built on this site and moved his residence there in 1779. General Building Director Johann Christian von Mannlich supervised the construction, creating designs in the Neoclassical style. In 1793, the castle was destroyed by French revolutionary troops.
