Zichow Castle

Zichow Castle is located in the municipality of Zichow in the Amt Gramzow, Uckermark district. The village of Zichow, probably of Slavic origin, is first mentioned in a document from Gramzow Monastery in 1288.

Of the medieval complex, only the keep, first mentioned in documents in 1527, remains today.

The exact time of the castle's construction is not clearly established. It is generally assumed today that it was built as part of the German eastward colonization around the middle of the 13th century.

In the Treaty of Oderberg in 1354, Margrave Ludwig II the Roman ceded the castle to Pomerania. It was explicitly mentioned in the border treaties between Pomerania and Brandenburg from 1355.

Under Elector Frederick II, the castle returned to Brandenburg in 1447. In 1449, the castle was pledged to Hans von Beerfelde with the condition that he staff and maintain it structurally.

Since 1456, the Lords of Arnim were in possession of the castle. After a fire, they had a palace built on the foundations of the old castle in 1745. In 1945, the owners were dispossessed and expelled by the communists.
