Zeißing Castle

The locality of Zeißing seems to have been first mentioned in a document in 1285. In 1376, a Chunrad der Puschinger zu Zayssingen is mentioned as the owner of the farm. He was one of the retainers of the Starhembergers, who owned the area at that time. In addition to some other properties, Rüdiger von Starhemberg also sold Zeißing Castle to Heidenreich von Maissau in 1380. However, the Puschinger family remained feudal tenants.

Hans Puschinger was the last lord of the castle from this family. His son-in-law Mathes Schirmer wanted to be enfeoffed with Zeißing by the Bavarian Duke Albrecht in 1466. By 1489, the "slos Czaissing" already belonged to Leopold Purckstaller. After Leonhard Kirchberger took over the lordship of Zeißing in 1452, Hans Georg I von Kuefstein bought both lordships in 1548. Hans Georg III, Baron von Kuefstein, had the old castle demolished at the beginning of the 17th century and an early Baroque moated castle built in its place. His son, Hans Ludwig, Baron von Kuefstein, completed the construction.

After his death, the Geyer von Osterburg family took over the lordship. Thereafter, the owners changed quite frequently. During the reconstruction after a fire in 1858, the castle was reduced by one storey. The moat was filled with the rubble. In the 19th century, Zeißing belonged to the economic fund of the Vienna Bürgerhospital. In 1926, Franz Schaumüller bought the estate. Since 1969, it has been run by the Kernstock family as an agricultural business. Guest rooms are also rented out.

The actual castle, due to its reduction in height, looks like a larger farmhouse, while the opposite ruin wall shows a castle-like character, although it once belonged to an outbuilding.
