Zandt Castle
Zandt Castle is a castle built in the 16th century in the municipality of Zandt in the Upper Palatinate district of Cham in Bavaria.
Many castles were built during the clearing and settlement of the Nordgau. Parallel to settlement activity and military security, Christianization and missionary work took place. Chammünster was founded from Regensburg as a base. Early connections with the high-episcopal fief of Zandt, which was subordinate to the Bishop of Regensburg, can be proven. The first mention of the Zandt family dates back to 1122. The oldest holders of the Zandt fief either named themselves after the place or gave it their name. Already a century later, Zandt fell to the powerful Sattelboger family from the Bavarian Forest. In 1399, Konrad Sattelboger built a Marian chapel in the village. The first architectural historical news dates from 1527: a walled castle, chapel, tavern, forge, and bakehouse.
At the end of the 19th century, bankers bought the castle property, which was then broken up. Since 1949, the former Hofmark seat has served as a retirement and nursing home, which is still operated by the Bavarian Red Cross today.
Architectural Description+
The castle is a two-story, long-rectangular building, concluded on the north side with obtuse-angled projecting corner towers crowned with battlements. In the middle of the west side is a striking, octagonal tower, also crowned with battlements, 18 meters high and 2.60 meters in diameter at the top. The part extending north to the tower is the oldest component of the castle and dates from the 16th century.
The wooden chapel from 1399 was replaced by a brick Baroque church in the 17th century. In the 19th century, the Church of Our Lady, until then a filial church of the Hofmark, had to be rebuilt twice after two severe fires. Only the figure of the Mother of God could be saved each time and still stands in the church today. In 1886, the new, larger church in Romanesque style, 23 meters long and 9 meters wide, was consecrated.
