Wollersheim Castle

The history of the historic building, often referred to as "Alte Vogtei" (Old Bailiwick), dates back to the 13th century. Originally, it was a monastery of the Cistercian Order, founded in 1232. The monks dedicated themselves to agriculture and scholarship, and the monastery quickly developed into an important spiritual and economic center in the region.

In the 16th century, during the Reformation, the monastery was secularized and fell into the possession of the local nobility. It was then converted into a residential castle, which served as the seat of the bailiff (Vogt) – hence the name "Alte Vogtei".

The "Alte Vogtei" presents itself as an impressive example of medieval and early modern architecture. The oldest parts of the building, particularly the foundation walls and parts of the cellar, still bear witness to its monastic past. The massive stone walls and small, high windows are characteristic of Romanesque and early Gothic construction.

During its conversion into a castle in the 16th century, significant changes were made. New wings were added, and the existing structures were adapted to the needs of a noble residence. Large windows were installed, and the interior was redesigned with more representative rooms. Traces of Renaissance elements, such as decorative gables and portals, can still be found today.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, further modifications were made, primarily to the interior. These included the installation of stucco ceilings, parquet floors, and tiled stoves, which reflect the Baroque and Classicist styles.

Over the centuries, numerous personalities have left their mark on the "Alte Vogtei". Among the most famous residents were:

• Abbot Heinrich IV (14th century): Under his leadership, the monastery experienced a period of great prosperity and influence.
• Bailiff Johann von der Leyen (16th century): He was responsible for the conversion of the monastery into a castle and played a significant role in the administration of the region.
• Countess Anna Maria zu Stolberg (18th century): She was known for her extensive library and her patronage of the arts.

The building was also the scene of various historical events, including:

• The Peasants' War (1525): The castle was briefly besieged by rebellious peasants, but ultimately not captured.
• The Thirty Years' War (17th century): The building suffered damage during the war but was subsequently rebuilt.

After a turbulent history, the "Alte Vogtei" was extensively renovated in the late 20th century. Today, it serves as a vibrant cultural meeting place. It houses a museum that presents the history of the building and the region, as well as a gallery for contemporary art.

Regular events such as concerts, readings, and exhibitions take place in its historic halls. The "Alte Vogtei" has thus become an important center for art and culture, attracting visitors from near and far.

Future Prospects and Preservation Efforts

The preservation of the "Alte Vogtei" as a cultural heritage site is a continuous task. A dedicated association, "Friends of the Alte Vogtei", is committed to maintaining the building and promoting its cultural use. Future plans include further restoration work, particularly on the historic gardens, and the expansion of educational programs for schools and visitors.

The "Alte Vogtei" remains a living monument that impressively combines history, architecture, and culture.
