Wolfsthal Castle

On the site of the present-day castle, there stood a moated castle in the High Middle Ages, which, together with other fortifications, was to secure the eastern border of the empire. Around 1137, Wolfsthal belonged to the high nobility of Asparn/Zaya as a free allodial possession.

Whether it came into the possession of the Babenbergs after their extinction around 1226 is questionable, as Wolfsthal is always referred to as a free allodial possession even later. In 1455, the Rohr family appears as the owners of the lordship. From 1460, the Lords of Zelking owned the castle as a free allodial possession. The regional court and the nearby Pottenburg belonged to them as a princely fief. In 1544, the heirs of Wilhelm von Zelking sold everything to Georg Walterskirchner. Under this family, the castle changed its appearance several times.

The Vischer engraving from 1672 still shows a fortified moated castle. Its moats were filled in 1790, and the building was altered in Baroque style. At that time, the defensive walls were probably also torn down. However, the castle only acquired its current appearance between 1874 and 1880. Schloss Walterskirchen, as it is also called after its long-standing owner family, was severely devastated in the last days of World War II. In recent years, renovation measures have been carried out.

The castle and estate are currently owned by the Konradsheim family.
