Wolfsberg Castle (Ermatingen)

High above the village, in 1571, Wolf Walter von Gryffenberg built a cube-shaped castle building. In 1731, Junker Johannes Zollikofer bought it and rebuilt it into the form we know Wolfsberg today. The southern building, known as the Parquinhaus, was probably built in 1795 by Junker Jakob Högger von Höggersberg and rebuilt in 1824 by the French Colonel Charles Parquin. He established a guesthouse here, which closed in 1839. Further owners included the Englishman Joseph Martin Parry, who transformed the estate into a model agricultural enterprise, and Karl Bürgi, who established a spa house around 1865, which remained in operation until 1918.

Under the crime writer Paul Meyer-Schwertenbach, Wolfsberg was the meeting place in 1942/1943 for SS-Brigadeführer Walter Schellenberg (1910–1952) and Colonel Brigadier Roger Masson. In 1970, the castle was acquired by the Swiss bank UBS, which had it renovated and expanded into a training center with additional buildings on the premises. On the west wall of the library building is an iron tower clockwork from the old castle, made around 1540 by Laurentius Liechti.
