Wolfsberg Castle

Wolfsberg Castle is a castle near Angern in Lower Austria.

Wolfsberg Castle is located on the steep slope of a high terrace overlooking the Danube. Below the castle lies the village of Angern, a cadastral community of Krems an der Donau. The castle was built around 1531 in the Renaissance style over a medieval manor. Major structural changes took place in the 17th and 19th centuries, when its towers were added to the castle. During the First World War, it housed numerous Galician refugees.

Wolfsberg Castle has had numerous owners throughout its history. From the 13th century onwards, it repeatedly came into the possession of Göttweig Abbey. From the 15th to the 17th century, the castle mostly belonged to the Edler von Geyer family. From 1934 to 1989, the religious community Sisters Servants of the Sacred Heart of Jesus ran a recreation home there, and from 1960, a nursing home. In 1989, the nuns sold the property to a real estate office. From there, the castle went to the physician and chemist Birkmayer in 1992, who wanted to convert it into a center for health and recreation. In 2006, the family of Nikolaus Fuchs acquired the property as the last castle owners to date.
