Wolfsberg Castle

Wolfsberg Castle is located on a hill in the north of the city of Wolfsberg in Carinthia.

The property was owned by the Diocese of Bamberg from 1007. The castle was first mentioned in 1178 in a document from St. Paul's Abbey. Previously, the fortress consisted of two irregular, interconnected wings. In the 16th century, the fortress was expanded to protect it from the approaching Turks. In 1561, a bell tower was erected. In 1759, Wolfsberg and thus also Wolfsberg Castle were bought by Maria Theresia. In 1846, Hugo Henckel von Donnersmarck bought the castle and had it converted into the English Tudor style by the architect Johann Romano von Ringe. Almost nothing remains of the original Renaissance building. The current owner is Kärntner Montanindustrie GmbH, which rents out the halls for events and weddings. The castle restaurant is operated by the Stölzl family.
